#1 Daily Exercise Program

I cannot over emphasize the importance of a daily exercise program if you want to stay fit for life. I make it a point to do at least 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day, taking only 1 day a week off. And I have done that daily for the last 61 years. If I do not exercise I do not feel healthy. A famous pianist was asked at 80 years old if he still practiced the piano. His reply might surprise you. “Yes. I practice every day for at least 1 hour. If I do not practice for even 1 day, I notice it. If I do not practice for 3 days, my critics notice, and if I do not practice for a week, everyone notices”. This was an 80 year old grandmaster concert pianist who still practiced everyday and realized all too well that if he failed to practice he would fail to be the best pianist in the World.

The same thing applies to staying fit for life. If don’t exercise daily, I notice it. If I don’t exercise for 3 days my family notices, and if I don’t exercise for a week everyone notices it. Yet I am sure many of you reading this post exercise only once a week or maybe not at all. If you don’t exercise you don’t notice and you certainly don’t miss it. But if you want to stay fit for life this infrequent exercise program will not work for you, not for anyone. So how do you motivate yourself to exercise daily?

There are a lot of people who will tell you that exercise should be “fun”, “exciting”, “fast paced” and “highly motivating” so you will enjoy it and want to come back day after day to keep on enjoying it. I think this is wrong. You can get sick of eating ice cream, even thought the times you eat it, you really enjoy it. But try eating it every day for every meal and you will learn not to enjoy it. You can’t rely on “feeling good” while exercising to motivate yourself to do you daily exercise program. You can get tired if going to Six Flags. If you are relying on “feeling good” while exercising as a reason to do it daily, it won’t work.

There are some who want to use “fear”. They tell you if you don’t exercise daily you will get sick, get cancer, get fat, get ugly. The fear lists go on and on and for some people this works for a few days, a few months, or even a few years. But if you are relying on fear to be the motivating factor that will cause you to exercise daily, you are sure to fail. I am a Christian and I strongly believe in Jesus and Heaven and Hell. The preachers for 1000’s of years used to preach about Hell and your eternal punishment if you didn’t follow Christ. They used “fear” as the primary source of inspiration to motivate people to follow Jesus. It worked for a long time, but stopped working when things got too good on Earth. When everyone was starving in the middle ages and dying of the plaque, telling them that it would be worse in Hell was very motivating. When everyone has a car, a cell phone, 2 TV’s, free education, etc. Fear of Hell is not motivating. So now many of the preachers use “positive motivation”. They call it the prosperity message. Sure it’s good now, but it will be even better if you follow Jesus. More money, more health, more of everything and then even more in Heaven, this Prosperity Christianity method soon will fall out of vogue too.

So what does work to motivate you to do daily exercise? It is not pleasure. It hurts to lift heavy weight, run long distances, workout hard. It is not fear. People don’t do something because of fear but for a short term or to avoid jail, etc. What works is OMA. Obsessive Mental Attitude, OMA is a term I invented 20 years ago to explain how humans get things done on a daily bases regardless of how they “feel” about actually doing it. I would be happy to send you a copy of my book on OMA if you just send an email asking for your free copy.

Mothers don’t have to read Positive Mental Attitude stories about how to love their children to love them. Mother’s and Father’s know that they can’t rely on feeling “great” about their child every day, and spend all their time to make everything wonderful and happy for their children and themselves. They know the child will have good and bad days but they will continue to love them during the good and bad times. They are obsessed with loving their child. I go into great detail about OMA in my free book, just ask for your copy. I will send it by email.

What does work to motivate you to daily exercise is an “obsession”. I am obsessed with staying fit for life, and whether I feel good or bad. Whether I am happy or sad. Whether it hurts to do the exercise or feels good. Whether it is hot or cold, whether I am tired or full of energy, I exercise daily. If I don’t get my daily exercise I am very upset and if I am travelling or doing some kind of work that stops me from going the club, or walking (I don’t run). I will do 100’s of sit ups and pushups and some resistance training at night before I go to bed. I can even exercise in a car, on a plane, or at the computer. When you make staying fit for life an obsession, you will never get out of shape because you won’t allow it. You mind is the most powerful motivator you have and when you make it obsessed with exercise and staying fit, you will indeed be fit for life.

  1. I agree with your 1#. In order to have a great, healthy living we should do exercises daily, because they are good not only for our body, but for mind too.
Personally, I love to stay fit with the help of some martial arts in Toronto classes... I love this great sport and I've learned so many interesting things.
