One of the most important things you can do to stay fit for life is to eat the right foods in the right combinations and at the right times. Most people have a basic idea of what foods are good for them but for some strange reason don’t seem to eat them on regular bases. If you were to ask them why they eat so poorly, the general answers are. Time, money, and availability but I think it has a lot more to do with “self control” than it does because of time, money, or availability.

Let’s look at each one of these reasons for not eating properly and see how valid they actually are. Time: a lot of overweight people will tell you that the reason they can’t eat right is that they don’t have the time to go to a restaurant that serves good healthy food, or the time to cook healthy food at home. I don’t buy that and that is easily refuted and can be overcome as a legitimate objection to proper eating habit with a little planning and foresight.

By the time you get out of junior high school most people are aware of where they are going to be all the times they would be “eating” and most people are aware of the food choices that will be available within the limited timeframe they have to eat. In Junior High and High School and College there is no reason to eat the pizza, get the French Fries as a side dish, and wash them down with a coke. Every school in America offers other choices and all the student has to do it pick up the vegetables, the meats and salads that are also in the serving line. I work with Jr. High and High Schools in Dallas all the time and every time I get a chance to eat lunch at one. I am very happy. You can get some great healthy food at very low cost, and if you are a student with financial problems you can get it for free. The only reason kids in schools are eating poorly is because they want to. They don’t want to eat the good food that is available and no one “forces” them to, so they pick the sweets and the “junk food”. These same poor eating habits and reasoning choices follows them later when they go into the workplace. When you let a child choose most will choose the path that is easiest and often the most damaging. If you let them choose between pizza and fries and grilled chicken and vegetable, most will choose the pizza.

I am not saying that you should force a child to eat right, but what I am pointing out is that the poor eating habits are engrained in the child from Jr. High on and follows them throughout their lives, causing them to get out of shape, overweight and definitely no stay fit for life.

The same thinking applies to the workplace when the child gets older. If you have been working at a business or a job for more than a few weeks, you know exactly what your food choices are in the time constraints that you have. If there are no healthy food choices available close enough to you during your lunch period. Then you actually might have to bring healthy food to the job with you, as tacky as it seems. It will not only save you money, and time, but can save your life in the long run.

Now the 2nd reason people say they ca not eat right, money. Money is more important today than anytime I can remember over the last 45 years and things don’t look like they are going to change quickly and give everyone all the money they need to buy only the best foods and eat at the best restaurants. It never has been that way and it never will be that way for 90% of all the people alive. Everyone has financial constraints that are associated with eating. I would love to eat sushi every few days, but my budget won’t allow it, and I am sure there are lots of foods you would love to eat, but can’t afford to eat on a daily bases too. But that does not mean that I can’ afford to eat healthy foods every day. Tuna fish costs very little, chicken is cheap, and vegetables are cheap. Almost every food that is good for you is relatively cheap and I simply refuse to believe that if you can afford to eat junk food, you can’t afford to eat the right foods.

It costs just as much to eat a Big Mac, fries and a soda as it does to cook some chicken and veggies at home. Don’t tell me the time problem again, we solved that already. It costs a lot more to eat out and eat poorly than it does to eat at home and eat correctly. The reason you are eating poorly is not because you can’t afford to eat right, it is because you don’t make the right choices with your food budget.

The last reason availability is really another version of the “time” problem. People will tell you there is nothing near them that is good to eat. That is really the same “time” problem and is solved by bringing you food with you, or by actually making the food that is near you better by how you eat it. If you only choice for lunch is McDonalds, then never get the fries and get 2 chicken sandwiches, or 2 hamburgers and put the meat on one bun and eat that. Never use mayo on your burgers or any food and never eat the deserts. If you get a drink, unsweetened tea is the best choice, then a diet beverage or water. There is never a good reason to drink a coke with 12 teaspoons of sugar in it and think that you are drinking healthy.

So lets’ summarize. There predominant reasons that people give for not eating right, time, money and availability are really not justified. You can bring your food with you, you actually will spend less on the good stuff than you will eating junk food and if you are forced to eat at a fast food restaurant, you can make the right food choices there. You can eat right and you can live a long and healthy life. It is simply a matter of will you, not can you.

I will be doing a series of articles on the food groups and menus in the next few weeks.

  1. It's a necessity to do exercises in order to stay fit and healthy... there are lots of ways where to choose from.
Personally, because I want to feel amazing and to be healthy, I'm following Toronto martial arts classes... not only that I take care of myself, but I've also learned how to defend myself!
